What is the Assumption Velada?
Old Girls' Day - third Sunday of October
On the third Sunday of October, Assumption San Lorenzo has its homecoming which is fondly referred to as Old Girls' Day. On that day, there is a mass at 9am followed by a lunch and at 3pm there is the Velada in the Mother Rose Auditorium (formerly Hall). The Velada or "soiree" is a program that is hosted by the silver jubilarians, the ones celebrating 25 years after high school.
The Silver Jubilarians (25 years) are the main hosts together with the Gold Jubilarians (50 years). Over the years, the former silver jubilarians have enjoyed the velada so much that they started wanting to perform sooner than their golden year, so now there's Pearl (30), Jade (35), Ruby (40), Sapphire (45), Emerald (55), Blue Diamond (65), Platinum (70). It's cute to see all the titas and lolas attend in their plaid uniforms complete with ankle socks and leather black flats. (Ehm, no worries if you can't find or fit into your old uniforms, everyone has theirs made again anyway.)
Because the show has gotten bigger every year and the Mother Rose Auditorium is too small to accommodate everyone, they actually put on an additional show - a family show on the Saturday at 5pm. This is the show without speeches or awards and also the very old batches are not required to attend so it's a much faster program. There is also a dress rehearsal on that Friday which is a whole run through of the program with blocking.
The Silver Jubilarians Commitment
As Silver Jubilarians, we are responsible for paying for the whole show plus a donation on the following year. So if our velada is on 2021, we are expected to give a donation of at least 1M on 2022 to the AAA which gets distributed to the mission schools.
We as Silver Jubilarians have to pay for the whole show - director, stage (LED), and for our own batch - choreographer, costumes, hair and makeup, practice venues, food during practice. During our initial meetings however, we hope that if we pool our resources we can come up with an amount that's much less, as we do feel that the money might be better used for the mission schools instead.
*UPDATE (As of October 2020, our 2021 velada will be online which means that the costs will of course go way, way down).
I can't dance.
Neither can we, but the fun part of the velada usually comes in the preparation and practices which is quite often leading up to the big day. There are usually four numbers by the silver jubilarians 8 minutes each number. Theres an opening and closing number, a song number that honors those that have gone before us, and some other number that usually describes the batch during that time. We can have less if the batch decides it.
I can dance but I think its baduy.
We will try our best to not be baduy but at least we can aim to not be so baduy together? As in previous years, the people who did not dance have so much regret because it's actually a lot of fun. Don't mind being baduy, we can all stay in the back. Also, our batch will have baduy police to X the baduy.
Okay game, where do I sign up?
We will be posting notices for meetings on fb soon. Thank you for joining, the more the merrier.
